About this study

Results from the 2008-09 survey give us the first insight into how the government's matched funding scheme has affected Universities fundraising performance. You can read the full report here or the topline findings here.

The Ross-CASE series of surveys are the only accurate source of information on the long-term health of philanthropic funding in the Higher Education sector.

The survey was first carried out in 2001-02 and NatCen has run the survey since 2006-07. You can read the findings for 2008-09, 2007-08, and 2006-07 here. The Ross-CASE survey is commissioned by the Ross Group and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE).

Potential policy impact

The UK Government will use the findings from this survey to assess the impact of their three-year £200 million matched-funding scheme, which started in August 2008. By matching philanthropic donations to Universities in England, they hope to boost the fundraising performance of the Higher Education sector. The Welsh Assembly Government have just introduced a similar scheme worth £10 million in Wales, and the 2008-09 survey will provide the baseline data for assessment of this scheme, which began in August 2009.

Methods

Every Higher Education Institution in the UK was invited to complete a questionnaire which you can download from our dedicated website.
