Longitudinal surveys

NatCen's expertise in major longitudinal studies comes from a long history of working with other key organisations, including the Centre for Longitudinal Studies, the Institute for Social and Economic Research, Longview and many other clients.

About our longitudinal surveys

Longitudinal studies are uniquely difficult. They need to feed data to future survey waves, track down movers, gain the confidence of respondents and ensure they tell us if they move, and link and analyse complex data sets.

NatCen offers all the various models of longitudinal projects including:

  • Birth and age cohort studies: these projects involve following a group, or groups, of subjects - all of a similar age - over time.
  • Panel studies: similar to cohort studies but usually following households or cohorts linked through a shared characteristic such as their job or where they live.
  • Longitudinal programme evaluations: projects which study a group of people before and after they have used a new service or policy intervention.
