If you have been contacted by us and asked to take part in a survey it means we are interested in your point of view. We use a method called ‘random probability sampling’ which means selecting people from lists such as the Post Office’s list of addresses. This method ensures that we gain an accurate and representative view of British society. Using this method also means the people we select are irreplaceable, no one can take your place on this survey.

Our research is used to gain further insight into British society. Our research has direct, practical application in terms of understanding social behaviour and informing policy.

Government departments and public bodies such as charities and local authorities need accurate information to help them plan for people’s needs. They also need insightful evaluations of current policies and up to date information on people’s views, circumstances and experiences.

No, you don’t need any special knowledge to take part. Most people who are chosen to take part agree to be interviewed and enjoy the experience.

Your participation in the study is voluntary. If you decide to take part you do not have to answer any particular question if you would prefer not to. At any time in the interview you can withdraw answers you have already given.

We will always answer your questions and be clear about the purpose of the research and who is funding it.

NatCen has a team of around 1000 highly trained interviewers. For most studies, the interview will visit you in person. All our researchers have gone through a strict security check and carry photo identification. Always ask for identification from any caller who is not known to you.

Your answers will be treated in strict confidence in accordance with the Data Protection Act. They are used for statistical research purposes only. Names and addresses are never included in our research results.
You will not receive any junk mail as a result of taking part. We do not pass addresses on to other organisations for commercial purposes.
