Andrew manages a team which has responsibility for two of NatCen's large, continuous surveys, namely the National Travel Survey (for DfT) and the Family Resources Survey (conducted with ONS for DWP). This group carries out a range of other projects related to travel or incomes. In recent years, it has also been commissioned to conduct three surveys on households use of energy. Reflecting the travel and environmental themes, Andrew co-authored a chapter on aviation and climate change for the 2009 British Social Attitudes report.
Temporarily, Andrew is also heading the Education Research Group, which undertakes a wide range of education and training studies, while additionally conducting research on volunteering and socio-legal matters.
Andrew joined NatCen in 1996, after a decade’s work as a social science researcher in two British universities. In 1998/9 he was seconded to be a Principal Research Officer (Grade 7) at the then DSS.
