Transitions form youth to adulthood in Scotland

About this study

This short report examines how the transition from youth to adulthood in Scotland has changed, in the context of the recent economic downturn. We took into account levels of employment in both graduates and non-graduates, participation in Higher Education, living arrangements and family formation.

We found:

• Generally, youth transitions are a longer and more diverse, particularly for young women.
• In light of the recent downturn, opportunities for young people are more limited.
• Graduates especially are in a much more difficult situation than they were four years ago.

Potential policy impact

Our research suggests that youth employment policy should target a larger age range. More broadly, it will lead to a greater understanding of the transition for youth to adulthood, and how best to support young people.

Our methods

Through secondary analysis of existing datasets, we are able to examine hidden vulnerability among those aged 16-29 in a specifically Scottish context. These datasets include the Scottish Household Survey, the Labour Force Survey and the Scottish Funding Council's API index.
