About this study

This timely new study will measure public perceptions of service personnel and veterans and how attitudes have been affected by the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Findings will publish on this website in December 2012.

The study will produce really valuable data about how attitudes differ depending on region, age, gender, race and ethnic background, and socio-economic status.

Our researchers will be testing the theory that though the public may support and respect the Armed Forces - even if it does not support the missions they undertake - this support is limited by little understanding of what Service personnel actually do.

Timeline

Potential policy impact

This study will make an important contribution to ongoing debate about the nature of society's and the Government's 'duty of care' to the armed forces, enshrined in the 'military covenant'.

Methods

We will be asking questions as part of the British Social Attitudes Survey conducted in 2011.
