Topic coverage

As with previous rounds, Round 5 included a mixture of 'core' modules (asked every round) and 'rotating' modules (which cover a particular topic in more detail and are designed to be repeated less regularly).

Core modules include:

The Round 5 rotating modules were:

  • Work, Family and Well-being: The Implications of Economic Recession. Subjects covered include:
    • Impact of the recession on households and work
    • Job security
    • Housework
    • Wellbeing
    • Experiences of unemployment
    • Work-life balance
  • Trust in the Police and Courts. Subjects covered include:
    • Confidence in the police and courts
    • Cooperation with the police and courts
    • Contact with the police
    • Attitudes towards punishment

Method

The ESS datasets, including Round 5, are freely available via the ESS's data website. Highly user-friendly, it offers data users the options of conducting simple analyses on-line, and of downloading all or parts of the dataset for more
detailed or complex analyses. A web-based training tutorial, ESS EduNet, is also available to aid the less experienced user.
